St Leonard's Hospital

The first mention of a hospital at Ednam comes in the reign of William the Lion when an exchange of land is recorded. In 1178, Ada, Countess of Northumberland, and daughter-in-law of David I, made a gift to the master and congregation. The master of the hospital is recorded as receiving various payments in the first half of the fourteenth century, and at the end of that century, in 1392, the hospital was a wedding present from Robert III to his sister and her husband John Edmondstoune.

The Edmundstounes remained as patrons for the next 250 years, with the hospital being referred to as both St Leonard's and St Lawrence's. The hospital, along with all the surrounding area, suffered from the ravages of the invading English in 1542 and again in 1544.

Today nothing remains but the field name - 'Spital Field'.
